Is there a teacher, mentor or UI Carver College of Medicine faculty member who has helped shape your education?

Dr. MacEwen (12MD, 15MS), head of the anatomy department, was a big influence on me, and also one of my favorite memories of medical school.  Just before Thanksgiving our first year of school he called me into his office and advised me to drop out of medical school and save my parents some money.  I was more afraid of disappointing my father than afraid of the professor.  For our final oral exam in Anatomy we could choose our professor, and I chose MacEwen in a make or break situation.  The first question he asked me was on a bone that I had not studied or seen, and he asked me what it was.  My answer was, “I don’t know!”.  With a smile, tossed out another bone and said, “Maybe you can tell from this one.”  Printed on the side was “promontory”, which I answered.  He smiled and said, “That’s right.” And gave me a B in the course for the semester.
