Obstetric Anesthesiology Division Chief

The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking an accomplished anesthesiologist to serve as chief of its Division of Obstetric Anesthesiology. This position is available at the rank of associate professor or professor. The division chief will have a clear vision for advancing the subspecialty, experience collaborating with obstetricians and other colleagues, and demonstrated leadership skills in shaping the future of the division. For candidates who have interest and experience, other departmental leadership positions – including vice chair roles in faculty development, research, and education – also are a possibility.

Division Chief Role

The division chief will be responsible for actualizing our tripartite mission – clinical care, education, and research—as it relates to obstetric anesthesiology. These responsibilities include:

  • Leading obstetric anesthesiology clinical operations to ensure consistently high-quality patient care with efficient and innovative utilization of clinical and material resources
  • Promoting effective collaborations among divisional faculty and other clinical and research scientists across campus
  • Facilitating undergraduate and graduate medical education in obstetric anesthesiology, including developing an obstetric anesthesiology fellowship program
  • Recruiting new faculty to the division and supporting their career development
  • Leading innovative scholarship in obstetric anesthesiology

Annual obstetric anesthesiology procedures include:

  • 1972 anesthesia deliveries plus 150 other procedures
  • 1242 epidurals for vaginal deliveries
  • 730 c-sections

Qualifications

Qualified candidates must show successful completion of an approved residency program in anesthesiology. Candidates must be board-certified in anesthesiology and have completed an obstetric anesthesiology fellowship or equivalent.

 Candidates must also hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure in Iowa.
