The Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine Service provides perioperative and acute pain management assistance for patients undergoing all types of surgeries. A variety of techniques are used to manage acute pain such as single shot peripheral nerve blocks, peripheral nerve catheter placement and local anesthetic infusions, and continuous neuraxial techniques.
Procedures are performed in both the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) and the Main Operating Rooms. In addition, we provide consultation for the medical management of complex patients undergoing surgery.
- Over 2,500 regional anesthetic procedures performed per year
- More than 900 upper extremity and 600 lower extremity blocks per year
- Most of the more than 700 neuraxial techniques were for thoracic epidural analgesia
- Nerve catheters for infusions in more than 180 patients per year
- 130 abdominal wall blocks and over 130 paravertebral blocks per year
Education
- The Department offers a Regional Anesthesiology and Acute Pain Medicine fellowship
Research
Our research includes both clinical and basic science research:
- Additives to local anesthetics for interscalene plexus blockade
- Acute and chronic pain after thoracic surgery
- Sonoanatomy for adductor canal block
- Preclinical postoperative pain mechanisms
