Biography
Joseph Walder is a 1975 MD and 1978 PhD from Northwestern University, who began as an assistant professor of Biochemistry in 1978. As an Iowa faculty member, he was active in approaches to develop anti-sickling compounds and hemoglobin derivative blood substitutes, cloning of restriction-modification systems, and development of modified nucleic acids as anti-sense reagents. In 1987, he founded IDT, now the world's leading provider of synthetic oligonucleotides, which is headquartered in Coralville, Iowa, with operations in San Diego, Belgium, Scotland and Germany. He was given the Prometheus Award for Iowa CEO of the year in 2007.
