Biography

Arthur Spector is a 1960 MD from University of Pennsylvania, who served as a post-doctoral fellow and Medical Research Officer at the National Heart Institute. He began his career at Iowa as Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine in 1968, rising to to Associate Professor of Biochemistry in 1972 and full Professor of Biochemistry and Internal Medicine in 1975. He launched an NIH-funded Arteriosclerosis Specialized Center of Research in 1976 and served as its director until 1991. He served as Interim Head of Pharmacology from 1994 to 1996 and of Biochemistry from 1996 to 1998. He is the author of more than 250 papers and reviews on fatty acid physiology and metabolism, the recipient of a Special Recognition Award from the Council on Arteriosclerosis Thrombosis and Vascular Biology of the American Heart Association. He is also the winner of the J.P. Long Teaching Award and the Distinguished Mentor Award from the Carver College of Medicine. As a world renowned biochemist, Dr. Spector retired from the Department in 2008, returning to Maryland and to a volunteer position at the National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.
