Szot appointed as associate dean for continuing and integrated education

Date: Friday, November 15, 2019

Joseph Szot, MDJoseph Szot, MD, has been named associate dean for continuing and integrated medical education in the UI Carver College of Medicine.

Szot, clinical professor of internal medicine, has served as the vice chair for education in the Department of Internal Medicine and associate director for the department’s residency program. In 2016, he became the medical director for the continuing medical education (CME) office in the Carver College of Medicine.

As CME evolves nationally, the value of interprofessional education leads many programs to develop a comprehensive approach for educating physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacists, and nurses. In this newly created role as associate dean, Szot will work with the other health sciences professions to develop a comprehensive continuing education program that will serve as a central service for accreditation. Opportunities also exist to integrate CME with national medical care initiatives, activities in the medical school and graduate medical education programs, and with statewide educators who partner with the college to train many UI Health Care students.

Szot has already developed strong partnerships with the UI Colleges of Nursing and Pharmacy to establish a comprehensive CME program that incorporates multiple disciplines. He will work with other educational teams within UI Health Care—and throughout the state—to better adapt educational activities to serve learners within a variety of practice settings.

In addition to integrating educational components across the enterprise and state, Szot will position the CME office to emphasize faculty development in both professional practice and leadership development in medical and professional education. Along with others in UI Health Care, Szot will develop metrics around educational productivity and scholarship, rewarding quantity as well as quality.

Szot has extensive expertise as both a clinician and educator and has made significant contributions advancing medical education at the national level, including six years of service on the planning committee for the Association of Program Directors in Internal Medicine (APDIM), as well as four years of service as co-director of the annual APDIM chief resident course. In 2018, he received the Leadership Impact Award from the Carver College of Medicine graduate medical education office in recognition of his contributions. He was a recipient of a 2015 Collegiate Teaching Award as well as other recognition from students and trainees. He also serves as one of the editors for the popular textbook DeGowin’s Diagnostic Examination.
