Using Telemedicine to improve diabetes care

The UI Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has launched a new service that makes it more convenient for pregnant women with diabetes to communicate with their obstetric providers. Patients are given an advanced blood glucose meter that automatically sends results to their care team. The TelCare® device is the first of its kind used in Iowa to monitor diabetes during pregnancy and provides instant feedback and coaching for patients. Key to the care provided by the team led by Janet Andrews, MD, and coordinated by Diedre Fleener, RN, are the weekly email and phone contacts between regular OB visits. A video produced by the UI Health Care Marketing and Communications video team describes the service through the eyes of one of its participants.
