UI Hospitals and Clinics

On any given day at UI Hospitals and Clinics more than 16,500 employees, students, and volunteers collaborate to provide safe, quality health care to our patients while also exceeding their expectations with excellent service.

We are an 860-bed hospital, which includes 190 beds at UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. In fiscal year 2021, we recorded more than 32,000 inpatient admissions and nearly 50,000 emergency department visits. We performed more than 35,600 major surgical operations and over 169,700 minor surgical procedures.  We also represent more than 200 outpatient clinics and care areas and in fiscal year 2021, we accommodated more than 1.3 million clinic visits at our main campus and community and outreach clinics across Iowa.

In fiscal year 2020, we employed over 1,850 physicians and dentists, resident physicians and resident dentists, and fellows. We also employed nearly 3,200 nurses as well as more than 3,200 medical staff, and 3,100 non-patient care professionals. In addition, we were assisted by a dedicated corps of volunteers who provided over 82,000 hours of service.

In addition to providing first-rate primary care, we offer the services of board-certified physicians in more than 250 specialties. We take seriously our role as a full-service health care center, receiving referrals for specialty care from physicians around the country.

Our inpatient services are located in our main complex of buildings on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City. Many of our outpatient services are also located at our campus location. In addition, we offer a variety of health care services at UI Health Care–Iowa River Landing in Coralville and at UI Health Care clinics and UI QuickCare locations throughout eastern Iowa.

Our physician staff members also serve as teachers and researchers in the University of Iowa's Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine. Their academic work complements their work as caregivers, giving them the advantage of using the latest technology and research understanding in your care.

Here is a brief sample of the numbers of procedures we performed in fiscal year 2020:
