The Human Rights and Ethics of Quarantine

Join Student Physicians for Human Rights and Global Medicine Society for a discussion of the ethics and legality of quarantine—restriction of movement of persons who are suspected to have been exposed to contagious illnesses. The practicality and concerns of quarantine being used for political motives will also be discussed and how that may impinge on international human rights law.

The overcrowded, unsanitary conditions in detention centers at the US-Mexico border make the threats of outbreaks of contagious illnesses and the possibilities of quarantine more salient in the current political climate. Come learn from Brian Farrell, UI College of Law Lecturer and Associate Director of the UI Center for Human Rights, about how these issues are approached from a legal and ethical perspective.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact Brian Paul in advance at (563)940-2182 or brian-paul@uiowa.edu
