Accessibility - [done]: How one web development team includes Accessibility in their Definition of Done

Making Accessible applications means making usable applications.  It shouldn’t be an afterthought.  Research Information Systems (RIS), a web development team at the University of Iowa, has had accessibility in their definition of done for years.  What does this mean in practice in a web development process?  What tools are used to test for accessibility?  How can you adjust your web development process to incorporate the same tools and techniques?

This session will introduce how RIS uses tools like Axe DevTools from Deque, Lighthouse chrome dev tools, NVDA and other tools to help ensure web applications they develop are accessible, and usable as possible when they first roll out because, by the time you get a complaint, it is too late to be truly inclusive.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa–sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact T.M. Weissenberger in advance at (319)384-3323 or todd-weissenberger@uiowa.edu
