Mannis specializes in corneal surgery and diseases of the external eye. He earned his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine. He completed ophthalmology residency training at Washington University in St. Louis and fellowship in Cornea and External disease at the University of Iowa. His primary research includes studies in the development of novel protein based anti-infective agents, corneal transplantation, visual rehabilitation of patients with corneal disease, management of diseases of the ocular surface, and oculodermal disease.   Dr. Mannis served as Editor-in-Chief of the journal CORNEA for six years and was the founding editor of Vision Pan-America: the Pan-American Journal of Ophthalmology. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals with over 150 published papers and is a reviewer for the Archives of Ophthalmology, the American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, Cornea, and Cornea and Contact Lenses. He is also editor / author of six recent books.   Dr. Mannis is a recipient of the R. Townley Paton Award in eye banking from the Eye Bank Association of America and was a recipient of the Lew Wasserman Award in research from Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc. He received the Moacyr Alvaro Gold Medal from the Federal University of Sao Paulo in Brazil and an honorary doctoral degree (Doctor Honoris Causa) from the National University of San Marcos in Peru for his educational contributions to Latin American ophthalmology. He has concluded his tenure as President of the Cornea Society and of the Pan-American Association of Eye Banks (APABO) as well as the Presidency of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology. He was named the 2014 Castroviejo Medalist by the Cornea Society. He has also completed a term as a Director of the American Board of Ophthalmology.   Dr. Mannis has trained fellows since 1990 with over 25 U.S. fellows in cornea and external disease as well as 15 international fellows and almost 100 residents. He has spent the last several years of his career in efforts to contribute to vision care in Latin America, for which he was the recent recipient of the Distinguished Scholarly Public Service Award by the Academic Senate of the University of California, Davis.
