Abel Inducted into National Academy of Medicine

Each year, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM), formerly known as the Institute of Medicine, elects no more than 70 national and 10 international members. Election denotes a pinnacle of professional achievement and of one’s commitment to solving pressing health-related challenges. Last year, at NAM’s annual meeting, Dr. Dale Abel, now Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, was announced as a member of the Class of 2015. At the time, NAM President Dr. Victor Dzau said, “Our newly elected members represent the brightest, most influential, and passionate people in health, science, and medicine in our nation and internationally.

Last week, at NAM’s 46th Annual Meeting, Dr. Abel and his fellow members of the Class of 2015 were formally inducted. Dr. Abel is a world-renowned leader in diabetes research and a national leader and mentor in the endocrine and diabetes community. He has been a faculty member of the University of Iowa and the Carver College of Medicine since 2013. In addition to his service as Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine, he is also Director of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, and Director of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center. He holds the François M. Abboud Chair in Internal Medicine and the John B. Stokes III Chair in Diabetes Research, and is Professor of Medicine, Biochemistry, and Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Abel’s election to the NAM makes him one of slightly more than a dozen members at the University of Iowa.
