McGee Wins Top Prize at SGIM

Second-year resident Dr. Matthew McGee received the first-place prize in Clinical Vignette Oral Presentations at this year’s Society of General Internal Medicine Midwest Regional Meeting (SGIM), held September 13-14 in Chicago.

Dr. McGee’s winning presentation, “Blood Pressure Control Causing a Bloody Mess,” detailed the work-up and successful treatment of a patient who was found to have hydralazine-induced ANCA-vasculitis leading to pulmonary hemorrhage. Hydralazine is usually used for a short period of time in hospitalized patients to treat hypertension. With long-term use, more rare side effects may go unnoticed. This case highlighted the need for early suspicion and diagnosis, as patients have the potential for full recovery if the medication is stopped in time.

Residency Program Director Dr. Manish Suneja congratulated Dr. McGee for “keeping the program and the Hawkeye flag flying high at SGIM,” and praised Dr. Ethan Kuperman, Associate Professor in General Internal Medicine, for his enthusiasm and creativity in mentoring Dr. McGee through this case and presentation.

Dr. McGee said that while presenting at the meeting was a bit intimidating, he enjoyed the opportunity to learn from other presentations and looks forward to future opportunities with SGIM meetings.
