Iowa Medical Society Foundation - Clinical Experience


IMS Foundation Clinical Experience

The Iowa Medical Society has generously agreed to assist in the funding of Global Programs Advanced Clerkships. Applications from M3's for electives to be taken in their M4 year should be submitted to both of the addresses below. Please let us know if you have questions.

The IMS Foundation considers funding requests if they relate to one of the following:

  • Health education, promotion, and/or wellness programs
  • Medical education or scientific programs sponsored by recognized specialty or public health organizations
  • Activities which enhance the delivery of quality health care in Iowa
  • Programs or activities which enhance the image of medicine and the career path of medicine

Funding requests for clinical experiences fall within broad guidelines and will be considered if they meet the following specific guidelines:

  1. The student must a University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine student year who will be pursuing the advanced clerkship during their M3 or M4 year.
  2. Clinical experiences will be in medically underserved areas, preferably in another country.
  3. Students must be directed and supervised by a health care provider having extensive knowledge and expertise in the area and a formal tie with the organization or institution where the clinical experience will be undertaken.
  4. Clinical experiences need to be arranged through and approved for credit by the Carver College of Medicine Global Health Programs Director.
  5. Clinical experiences are to be taken within the following academic year and must be completed prior to graduation.
  6. Requests for funding must include:
    • the student's goals for the clinical experience;
    • a plan to achieve these goals;
    • a plan to evaluate the experience;
    • description of language and cultural preparation for the experience;
    • a budget for living expenses, travel and other project related costs including any other source of funds which will be received;
    • the name of the student's sponsor with information on their credentials.
  7. Requests for funding should be submitted asap for clerkships to be pursued between July 2019-June 2020. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis while funds are available.
  8. Students are required to submit a written report to the IMS Foundation upon completion of their clinical experience.

Students may apply for up to $1,000.
