Below is some information on our purpose, plan, team, and a link to our facebook page for more.

PURPOSE

Many students enter medicine hoping to help patients improve their health. However, we soon realize that helping patients may often require more than what doctors can accomplish on their own in clinical practice.

Physicians have an intimate understanding of what it takes to keep a patient healthy, and developing a deeper understanding of technology, business and policy (TBP) can allow for novel, meaningful strides in patient health. The current healthcare landscape is filled with great examples of physicians succeeding in these settings - from helping develop computers algorithms for medical diagnosis (Google) to opening up easier to access clinics (UIHC - QuickCare) to restructuring reimbursement in a way that matches value provided (CMS - MACRA

 PLAN

We will use 3 modalities to reach our goals - information, networking, and project support.

Information is for empowering students to gain fundamental skills. This will be delivered via seminars with expert panels, a curated list of recommended online resources, and selected seminars provided by the wider UI community (eg from Tippie or UIHC).

Networking is for ideas. We hope to connect students not only to each other and to faculty, but to encourage meeting professionals in the larger community as well (EPIC-IC Chamber of Commerce).

Project support is the application. We hope to encourage students to try applying their solutions by giving students a central group from which to recruit possible co-leaders and also a community which would be glad to weigh in on issues such as impact/ feasibility.

TEAM

We come from different backgrounds, but are brought together by a shared belief that as future physicians we will be uniquely positioned as collaborators to help improve the healthcare system (Alphabetical by last name).

Philip studied Biochemistry at the Univ of Washington, and then worked in healthcare administration (5 months, private clinic), and in the hospitality industry (22 months, cafe/pizzeria/wine bar).

Amanda studied Human Biology at Stanford, and then worked in healthcare consulting (2 years).

Daniel studied Science Business at Notre Dame, and continued there for an M.S. (eng./science/tech entrep. - thesis project on using tech to improve lab testing in underserved countries).

Adam studied Finance and Biochemistry at the Univ of Wisconsin, and then worked in research labs (neuroeng./ clin. neurosci./ oncology) and at EPIC (EMR company).
