Financial Aid Information for Physician Assistants

Requirements Before Your Aid Disburses

  • Enrolled at least half-time in a program leading to a degree at University of Iowa.  
  • No outstanding charges from a previous term.
  • Complete, signed, and returned loan promissory note(s).
  • Completion of Entrance Loan Counseling, if you have been awarded the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan(s) and you are a first-time borrower.
  • Not in default of any educational loan, including short term emergency loans from ECSI ECSI loans are billed separately (sent to your home address that is on file; NOT your U-Bill).

If all the above requirements are met, your aid package will typically disburse the first day of class (each semester). Below is the disbursements by class:

PA1-PA2's have summer/fall/spring disbursements; tuition is taken out summer/fall/spring for PA1's, but only in fall/spring for PA2's.

Scholarships from Private Sources

Iowa Residents or UI students

  • Margaret P. Benson Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship recognizes qualified female applicants who demonstrate financial need and are committed to women's issues, diversity and social activism. One or two award that range from $1000-$2000 are available annually. Application form must be accompanied by college transcripts, FAFSA , personal statement and 2 letters of reference.   • Linn County Medical Society

Scholarships awarded to students in health care professional schools.  Intended to encourage health care practitioners to practice in Linn County area but there is no service requirement.  All CCOM students meet scholarship residency requirements. http://www.linncountymedical.org/scholarship.php     Application deadline is March 4. 

  • Behr Scholarship and Education Fund

The purpose of the fund is to provide scholarships for education programs. Scholarships are tobe used for tuition and other direct educational expenses for attendance at any college or medical/technical school.   • Des Moines Women's Club Lois Dell Memorial Scholarship

$1000 awarded to deserving female student in an accredited university pursuing a degree in any academic field. Applicant must be a legal resident of Polk, Boone, Dallas, Jasper, Madison, Marion, Story or Warren counties in Iowa. Short essay re: biographical information and career aspirations and 3 letters of recommendation must accompany application. Further information available at: http://www.desmoineswomensclub.org. General

  • American Academy of Physician Assistants Scholarship

Scholarships in $2,000 denominations are distributed by the PA Foundation.  Any AAPA student member attending an accredited PA program and in the professional phase of his/her program is eligible to apply for scholarships.  Recipients are selected based on financial need, academic achievement, past employment, and goals as a PA. Applications are available on request from the national office (703) 519-5686, or on-line at  http://www.aapa.org/student-academy/awards/physician-assistant-foundation-scholarship.  Application deadline is January 15.

  • Tylenol Scholarship

The makers of Tylenol award $250,000 - $350,000 to outstanding students who are pursuing health-related studies. Funds will be awarded to at least 170 students in the amounts of $1,000 and $5,000. Must be a resident of the 50 United States, Puerto Rico or the District of Columbia, have completed at least one year of undergraduate or graduate course of study by the Spring of 2011 at an accredited two or four year college, university or vocational – technical school, Must provide proof of enrollment to a public health/health education, med school, nursing and/or pharmacy degree program with one or more years of school remaining . Past winners are not eligible to apply or win in 2011/2012 Employees of McNeil Consumer Healthcare Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc., ISTS, Inc., their affiliates, subsidiaries, advertising and promotion agencies and the families of each are not eligible.   • USA Funds Scholarship

USA Funds®, a nonprofit organization that helps American families benefit from postsecondary education, offers $1,500 scholarships to qualified full-time or half-time undergraduates and to full-time graduate and professional students. Applicants for the scholarships must be enrolled or plan to enroll in course work at accredited two- or four-year colleges, universities or vocational/technical schools beginning with the fall term of the application year. The program assists students with an annual income of $35,000 or less. Up to 50 percent of the awards go to students who are members of an ethnic minority group or are physically disabled.
