Summer Research Fellowship Mentor Responsibilities

Summer Medical Student Research Mentors are responsible to provide supervision for Summer Research Fellows (SRF) during a 10- to 12-week research experience. Each mentor will assist their student in outlining a project that pursues a scientific question and assist the student in becoming familiar with the processes involved in:

  1. Identifying a research problem
  2. Evaluating its significance
  3. Designing experiments to address the problem/answer the questions posed
  4. Interpreting experimental data collected
  5. Preparing a written (one-page abstract) and oral presentation (slides or poster) of the results

Responsibilities of the Summer Research Fellowship Mentor:

In addition to the above, SRF mentors must commit to the following:

  • Work with (mentor) no more than two students during a given summer
  • Provide the student with an electronic copy of a letter of support briefly summarizing the student's project and the student's role, as well as your commitment to supporting the student's research activities throughout the SRF program
  • Provide the student with an electronic copy of your NIH-formatted biosketch File biosketch-blank-format-rev-10-2021.docx , File non-fellowship-biosketch-sample-2021 (1).docxfor the SRF application (maximum 5 pages)
  • Assure that the student completes the appropriate compliance training (e.g., IRB, ACURF)
  • Assure that the department completes a supplemental appointment and requests EPIC access/training for student researchers, if necessary
  • Meet with the student regularly throughout the summer and provide guidance and support as necessary in completion of the project
  • Supervise the student's preparation of a Research Project Report (oral or poster), including a one-page abstract of the work
  • Participate in the Medical Student Research Conference as a judge/reviewer (September)
  • Submit an evaluation of the student's performance at the end of the research experience
