Iowan high school students visit Al Klingelhutz's lab

Students from Louisa-Muscatine High School in Letts, Iowa visited the lab of Al Klingelhutz, Associate Professor in Microbiology recently. They viewed HeLa cells (originally derived from Henrietta Lacks) in his lab. The students are reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. The book discusses a range of subjects on ethics in research, informed consent, cervical cancer, HPV, and cell immortalization. Dr. Klingelhutz led an interactive discussion on these topics with the students. This was part of a visit to The University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine to learn about the field of medicine and basic sciences.

Dr. Chioma Okeoma recognized as a 2016 Iowa Women of Innovation Award winner

Dr. Chioma Okeoma was recognized with the Research Innovation and Leadership Award from the Technology Association of Iowa. Her research has led to discoveries that could improve therapies in HIV and breast cancer. Okeoma was one of eight women leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) to be honored as winners of the Ninth Annual Des Moines Area Community College Iowa Women of Innovation Awards.
