Research Summary

I have been with the Department of Microbiology since 2003. During that time I have been involved in several courses. My current courses include: Mechanisms of Health and Disease IV, Pharmacy and Nursing Microbiology, and Summer Web-Based Nursing Microbiology.

I started out with a degree in Microbiology, Zoology and Chemistry and became a Medical Technologist in the hospital setting. I soon found that I loved the clinical emphasis, especially in Microbiology. I received my Ph.D. in Microbiology in 1992, from Iowa State University. My research involved Enterococci. I studied the identification of new enterococcal species and their association with food and meat spoilage.

After obtaining my Ph.D., I worked in the Salt Lake City/County Health Department, then as the microbiology department head in a 250-bed hospital in Salt Lake. I served on the infection Control Committee for the hospital and gained a lot of insight into the epidemiology of disease, another love of mine. At The University of Iowa, I write lab manuals and design new lab adventures for my students. I also lecture, including examples of my own clinical experience (some more entertaining than others). I love teaching and feel very lucky to be able to put all my energy into teaching medical professionals in clinical microbiology.

In my free time I am a chauffer to my 3 kids, I do home improvement projects and I like spending time with my family.
