Fall 2021 investiture to celebrate endowed faculty appointments

Date: Tuesday, September 21, 2021

University of Iowa Health Care faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend an investiture ceremony honoring four Carver College of Medicine faculty at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 23, at the Levitt Center for University Advancement.

The investiture will celebrate faculty appointments to an endowed chair and two professorships established by the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust of Muscatine, Iowa, and an endowed professorship established in honor of Juanita J. Bartlett by Norman and Barbara Johnson of Naples, Florida; Boulder, Colorado; and Iowa City, Iowa.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, face masks are encouraged and socially distanced seating will be available at the event. There will not be a post-ceremony reception.

A dedicated Cambus will be available for round-trip transportation from the Carver College of Medicine to the Levitt Center, beginning at 1:40 p.m. Sept. 23. The Cambus will pick up and drop off passengers at the Medical Education and Research Facility bus stop on Newton Road.

The Roy J. Carver Chair in Neuroscience IV

Donna Hammond, PhD

Hammond is a professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Anesthesia, and she holds a secondary faculty appointment in the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology. Her research focuses on the mechanisms that underlie the transition of acute pain to chronic pain. The Hammond lab is currently examining the mechanisms responsible for the relationship between smoking and chronic pain in that each appears to worsen the other.

The Roy J. Carver Professor of Neuroscience and Pharmacology

Matthew Potthoff, PhD

Potthoff is an associate professor in the Department of Neuroscience and Pharmacology. His research explores how peripheral hormonal cues signal the brain to control body weight and blood glucose levels. Potthoff and his research colleagues also study the role of epigenetics in regulating neuronal activity and its impact on metabolism, neurodegeneration, and aging.

The Roy J. Carver Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience

Jacob Michaelson, PhD

Michaelson is an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry, with secondary appointments in biomedical engineering in the UI College of Engineering and communication sciences and disorders in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Michaelson uses computing and genomics to better understand psychiatric conditions, particularly autism. His research team also examines the role genetics play in language development, gender identity, and twice-exceptionality.

The Juanita J. Bartlett Professor

Nandakumar Narayanan, MD, PhD

Narayanan is an associate professor and vice chair for basic and translational research in the Department of Neurology. Narayanan’s research focuses on cognitive dysfunction in Parkinson’s disease. His lab also studies the influence of dopamine on prefrontal brain networks that control cognitive behaviors such as timing and performance monitoring.
