Infectious disease may be acute or chronic and may be caused by a variety of microorganisms that may include bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Our staff of experienced clinical microbiologists has been trained in the most up to date diagnostic methods for the detection and testing of microbial pathogens in the areas of:

  • antimicrobial susceptibility
  • bacteriology
  • molecular methods
  • mycology
  • mycobacteriology
  • parasitology
  • virology

The laboratory provides specialized support for the Divisions of Clinical Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases.

The faculty also directs active research programs with an emphasis on the epidemiology, mechanisms and detection of antimicrobial resistance.

The laboratory has an extensive medical education program that includes the training of residents, fellows, medical students and Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) students.
