Dr. Dao-Fu Dai receives an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant Award

September 25, 2018

Dr. Dao-Fu Dai

Dr. Dao-Fu Dai received a seed grant from the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Institutional Research Grant program sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The seed grant is in the amount of $30,000 for the project entitled “The spectrum of myeloma associated kidney diseases and the role of mitochondrial oxidative stress”, and the project period is from September 1, 2018 to August 31, 2019. These studies will characterize the spectrum of myeloma associated kidney disease in three different murine models of multiple myeloma. The goal is to establish reproducible models of myeloma-associated kidney disease as well as provide direct evidence for the role of mitochondrial oxidative stress in various myeloma-associated kidney pathologies. These studies will also provide a scientific basis for potential clinical applications of mitochondrial antioxidants in these diseases. A fundamental understanding of how paraproteins result in mitochondrial dysfunction and downstream ROS-mediated signaling may lead to strategies to treat and prevent kidney injury in myeloma-associated kidney diseases.
