Resident and Fellow Farewell Award Fierro-Fine Holman Keeney

Carol Holman, MD, PhD, was recently honored as the recipient of the 2015 Resident Teaching Award. Each year, residents select a faculty member in the Department of Pathology who they believe has been an outstanding teacher and mentor. Co-chief residents Amelia Fierro-Fine and Matthew Keeney presented the award to Dr. Holman at the Resident and Fellow Farewell Dinner, held June 12, 2015.

Submitting their nominations, residents offered these comments:

  • Dr. Holman is patient at the scope. She points out interesting aspects of every case and explains her reasoning.
  • Dr. Holman is exemplary in taking residents through her thought process.
  • I really appreciated that she would work through things with me in real time. She's a great example of someone who keeps digging until she feels satisfied she has answered the question to the best of her ability.
  • Dr. Holman has a great way of explaining complex problems in concise, easy to follow components.
  • Dr. Holman presents material in a concise, thorough manner. She is able to explain complicated concepts simply at first, allowing her to delve into great detail when needed. She is brilliant!

Stephanie Stauffer, MD, is the 2015 recipient of the George D. Penick Award for Excellence in Education. This award is presented annually to a Pathology Resident who displays excellence in and commitment to the education and teaching of medical students, peers, and clinical colleagues. Dr. Jensen, Residency Program Director, presented the award to Dr. Stauffer at the Pathology Resident and Fellow Farewell Dinner held on June 12, 2015.

The 2015 recipient of the Megan C. Danton Award is Emily Fuller, PA. The Danton award is presented annually by Pathology Residents to a laboratory staff member for exemplifying excellence and dedication in teaching laboratory medicine. Co-chief residents Amelia Fierro-Fine and Matthew Keeney presented the award to Emily at the Resident and Fellow Farewell Dinner, held June 12, 2015.

Pathology Residents praised Emily for her steadfast commitment and positive attitude toward teaching in the gross room:

  • Emily is fun to work with and has a lot to teach the residents about grossing, but also about organization and how to work well in a (sometimes stressful) busy work environment.
  • Always helpful and willing to answer questions in the gross room, whether about fundamentals or neat tricks to make things easier.
  • No matter how many times I ask for help in the gross room, Emily is willing to sacrifice her time for me. A She is consistently positive, efficient, and helpful.
