The Department of Pathology is part of comprehensive health sciences provided to patients of the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. The Department of Pathology Clinical Laboratories are comprised of five clinical sections: Anatomic Pathology, Core Laboratories, DeGowin Blood Center, Medical Microbiology/Molecular Pathology and Point of Service.
The section of Anatomic Pathology is composed of Anatomic Records, Autopsy/Decedent Care Center, Cytology/FNA, Electron Microscopy, Histology/Neurohistology, Immunopathology and Surgical Pathology. The section supports service, teaching and research activities.
Core Laboratories is comprised of Chemistry, Critical Care Lab (CCL), Special Care Nurseries Labs (SCNL), Hematopathology and Specimen Control. Over 170 professionals staff these laboratories and support teams, which serve the University of Iowa Health Care in-patients, outpatients, research programs and outreach physician offices.
The DeGowin Blood Center is a hospital based blood center offering a wide range of services. The Blood Bank performs moderate and high complexity diagnostic testing. All blood products transfused at UIHC are issued through the Blood Bank where technologists ensure that donor units are compatible with the patient. Tissue and Cellular Therapies provides specialized human tissue for implantation and processes stem cell and bone marrow collections for transplantation for a variety of clinical disorders. The Blood Donor Center collects blood products for UIHC patients at our fixed site and at mobile blood drives in the community. The Patient Services unit utilizes highly complex blood cell separator instruments to perform therapeutic apheresis procedures used in the treatment of patients with a variety of medical illnesses. Patient Services operates a clinic that is open during normal business hours and also performs a variety of services during nights and weekends.
Medical Microbiology is a full service laboratory offering a complete spectrum of diagnostic tests. The laboratory performs approximately 125,000 diagnostic procedures annually and provides specialized support for the Divisions of Clinical Epidemiology and Infectious Diseases. The Molecular Pathology Laboratory provides testing and consultation in all areas of molecular diagnostics including genetics, infectious disease and oncology testing.
Commercial Mailouts provide physicians with laboratory testing menus for esoteric testing not performed within University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Pathology Phlebotomy Service is committed to providing quality patient samples in a timely manner with excellence in patient satisfaction.
