Dr. Sigmund to receive 2017 Leadership in Research Award

Curt D. Sigmund, Ph.D., Roy J. Carver Chair in Hypertension Research, and DEO, Department of Pharmacology, will receive the 2017 Leadership in Research Award from the Vice-President for Research and Economic Development at the University of Iowa.  The Leadership in Research Award is a lifetime achievement award that recognizes distinguished leadership in research and scholarly accomplishments over a career.  Dr. Sigmund has been on the UI faculty since 1991, is the Founding Director of the UIHC Center for Hypertension Research, established in 2014, has been Chair of the Department of Pharmacology since 2010, and served as the Director of the UI Transgenic Animal Facility from 1991-2010.   The nomination letter pointed to his leadership in developing robust research programs involving teams of researchers funded by a program project grant in Hypertension from the NHLBI and a strategically focused research network grant from the American Heart Association.  The AHA research team encompasses a collaboration of faculty in 3 UI colleges; the Carver College of Medicine (Departments of Pharmacology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Pathology), the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (Department of Health and Human Physiology), and the College of Public Health (Department of Biostatistics). 

The award will be presented to Dr. Sigmund at the annual Discovery & Innovation Awards Ceremony on April 24, 2017.
