Dr. Marken receives K01 award

Kathleen Markan, PhD, Postdoctoral Research Scholar, has been awarded a 4-year National Institute of Health (NIH) K01 Mentored Research Scientist Development Award entitled "A Novel Mechanism to Increase the Beiging of White Adipose Tissue."  The studies outlined in this proposal are designed to prepare the PI, Dr. Kathleen Markan, with the technical and intellectual expertise required to become an expert in beige adipocyte development and metabolism.  Dr. Markan will use her recently generated mouse models and a host of complementary molecular techniques and bioinformatic analysis to determine the role of the transcription factor TBX1 in beige adipocytes. Beige adipocytes display a tremendous capacity for energy expenditure and their biology is being actively studied as a potential means to treat human obesity. Dr. Markan’s work will provide direct insights regarding these processes.  This application was thoughtfully designed to allow Dr. Markan to transition her work into independence and progress to tenure-track faculty status at the end of the award period. Progression toward these goals will be strongly supported and closely monitored through Dr. Markan’s direct and regular engagement with her team of mentors, collaborators and consultants.
