Dr. Strack receives new R21

Dr. Stefan Strack, John P. Long Professor of Pharmacology, was awarded an R21 grant from the National Institutes of Mental Health (NIMH) entitled “PP2A in neurodevelopmental disorders”. The project seeks to identify mechanisms by which recurrent de novo mutations in the protein phosphatase 2A regulatory subunit PPP2R5D cause intellectual disability. Results from this project should lead to a better understanding of not only the pathophysiology of intellectual disability, but also of selection mechanisms that drive recurrence of de novo mutations in the paternal germline. Since some neurodevelopmental disorders may be reversible, and since PP2A is a drugable enzyme, studies that build on this proposal could lead to new therapies.
