Noninvasive Brain Stimulation

About

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is a non-invasive technique used to excite the brain using induced currents. The TMS coil produces a magnetic field that passes through the skull to induce a small electric current in the underlying brain tissue. When the TMS pulses are delivered at regular intervals it is termed repetitive TMS, or rTMS.

Repetitive TMS can be applied daily to cause more durable changes in the underlying cortex and has shown to be effective as a treatment for depression when applied to a specific region of the brain called the left frontal cortex.
