Deep brain stimulation refers to the surgical placement of electrodes in the brain to deliver a very precise form of stimulation. University of Iowa's Hospitals and Clinics provides cutting-edge clinical care, utilizing this highly targeted brain stimulation for select conditions. UIHC's deep-brain stimulation program, led by Dr. Teri Thomsen, provides clinical care in a highly multidisciplinary environment, integrating care across services and disciplines to provide the best possible patient experience. 


What we treat

DBS is used to treat Parkinson’s Disease, tremor, dystonia, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), and occasionally for other neurological and psychiatric conditions that don’t respond well to medications.
