Richard Shields PT, PhD, FAPTA received two NIH R01 grant awards totalling over 3.6 million dollars. The projects focus on improving metabolic health of people with spinal cord injury (SCI) through skeletal muscle activity. Dr. Shields and his research team offer novel interventions that allow people with paralysis to exercise their muscles leading to changes in muscle gene regulation and systemic metabolism. Key members of Dr. Shields' research team include Dr. Shauna Dudley-Javoroski, Dr. Michael Petrie, Dr. Colleen McHenry, Chu-Ling Yen, Keith Cole, Mike Shaffer, and Amy Kimball.
