On Campus Programs

1. Apply by mid-December to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Radiation Sciences Interest. Transfer students – wait to pay the $325 acceptance fee until a program admission decision is made.  Send updated transcripts to Admissions at the end of each semester.
2. Review the Technical Standards, Self Disclosure of Criminal Background, and Health Screening and Immunization Requirements documents.  Certification is often required to practice in these careers.  Students may be denied application for certification if they have committed ethics or criminal violations.  Students are encouraged to verify their eligibility with the corresponding credentialing agency:
   • Radiologic Technology and Radiation Therapy - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)
   • Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) – American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
   • Nuclear Medicine Technology – Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) and ARRT
3. Apply by January 15 to the professional program (track) -- a separate application for competitive selection.  Program applications open in early November.

Student Selection

Meeting the admission requirements does not guarantee acceptance to the respective on-campus professional program. Top candidates are invited to an on-campus interview.  Each year, the Selection Committee determines the most qualified candidates for acceptance into the program for the fall class.

Job Shadowing and Patient Care Experience

To understand and gain valuable insight to the radiation sciences fields as it relates to the health care delivery system, students are strongly encouraged to job shadow radiation sciences professionals and volunteer or seek part-time employment in health care settings.

• Job Shadowing: observe professionals in the area(s) of interest, understand the tasks and responsibilities
• Patient Experience: gain direct patient care experience, learn about the health care setting, gain patient communication skills. Suggestions: work or volunteer, become CNA certified and work, contact local hospitals, senior centers, disability camps, health care facilities, etc. UIHC volunteer opportunity: https://uihc.org/college-student-volunteers
• Document experiences and shadowing for the application. Include facility, contact person, hours and activities.

Online RT to BS Program

For Radiologic Technologists and Nuclear Medicine Technologists who are ARRT(R), ARRT(N), or CNMT certified and plan to complete the degree online.

1. ​​​​Complete the prerequisite courses.
2. Apply to the Carver College of Medicine, Radiation Sciences RT to BS major.
3. Contact the Radiation Sciences Student Affairs Office (radiation-sciences@uiowa.edu) or 319-353-8388.

Students must complete the final consecutive 30 sh: online CT, MRI, CVI, or BI courses (21-23sh), two advanced courses (6sh), and electives (1-9sh).
