Geeta Lal Selected as 2018 Kim Ephgrave Visiting Professor by AWS

Geeta Lal, MD, MScOn April 4th, 2018, the Association of Women Surgeons and the AWS Foundation announced that Dr. Geeta Lal had been selected as the 2018 Kim Ephgrave Visiting Professor. The Kim Ephgrave Visiting Professor Program provides opportunities for  institutions to host distinguished women surgeons as speakers.  The program is named in honor of Kim Ephgrave who served as AWS President from 2000 – 2001 and is funded by the generosity of AWS donors.  AWS Visiting Professors have an opportunity to share professional and personal experiences with department chairs, faculty, residents and students through grand rounds, walk rounds, lectures and research presentations and other arranged opportunities.

Dr. Lal is an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Surgical Oncology and Endocrine Surgery, and Associate Chief Quality Officer at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. She is also Co-Director of the Medical/Surgical Oncology Inpatient Unit, and joined the Department of Surgery in 2004.

Kim Ephgrave, MDDr. Kim Ephgrave, for whom this visiting professorship was named, was a Professor in the UIHC Department of Surgery. She joined the Dept. of Surgery in 1986 and was the first recipient of the Robert and Hélène Soper Chair, the first endowed chair in the Department of Surgery. She had a strong commitment to surgical education serving as both the Junior Clerkship Director and the Associate Program Director for the residency program during her career. Her early scholarship involved a variety of GI Surgery topics; she published some 72 peer-reviewed articles. In later years, her scholarship interests focused on surgical education and ways to improve the teaching abilities of surgeons and residents. She passed away in March, 2012, after a lengthy battle with cancer.
