How to Apply

Student with papers

After initial committee review of complete applications, select applicants will be contacted by email and invited for an interview. Normally, those interviews would be conducted on-campus. Due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19, Program Directors and administrators are working to develop plans that may include both virtual and on-site activities. If they occur, any on-site activities would be optional, and should an applicant choose not to visit campus in person, that will not affect the admissions decision.

On campus interviews are subject to approval from the University of Iowa and from state and federal public health officials.  If on-campus interviews cannot be held then the interviews will be conducted via video or audio-conferencing platform.  Travel costs within the U.S. will be covered by the academic programs.

The Biomedical Science Program (BSP) coordinates admissions and first-year graduate studies for 7 doctoral subprograms. Applicants to the Biomedical Science Program submit the University of Iowa Graduate Admissions Application and indicate Biomedical Science as their intended program of study. Students enjoy the flexibility of investigating several disciplines prior to affiliating with a specific subprogram by performing three research rotations in the laboratories of any of the BSP faculty, regardless of the faculty person’s program affiliation. The BSP has organized its first-year curriculum in order to meet the dual goals of: A) providing all students with an integrated, core foundation in modern molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, genetics, quantitative literacy, and critical thinking; and B) providing maximum flexibility to accommodate students' individual interests.

GRE scores are not required
