What is Mini Medical School?

Mini-Medical School

Throughout the year, the University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine hosts a variety of educational programs, Mini-Medical Schools, which offer a unique insight into the world of science and medicine at the University of Iowa. For an evening, students – ranging in age from high school students to retirees – with a shared interest in research, medicine and health, embark on a journey examining the scientific foundations of health and disease. Presented in a lecture format and in a language everyone can understand, your instructors are world renowned University of Iowa experts making biomedical discoveries that lead to better treatments, cures and prevention.

Annual Mini Medical School 3-week Series

Every spring, the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine hosts a multiple week Mini-Medical School, consisting of three three-hour Tuesday evening sessions covering a wide spectrum of the latest breakthroughs in medicine and science. Hosted at the Medical Education and Research Facility (MERF) on the University of Iowa campus in Iowa City—UI researchers share cutting-edge research and biomedical discoveries happening at IOWA and how these advances are changing the course of medicine and changing patient care.

In addition to learning from our world-renowned faculty in the classroom, students have the opportunity to take part in hands-on, experiential activities, or mini-lectures before most classes. Designed to give a glimpse into ways that today’s medical students are learning, activities include exploring the facilities, engaging with current medical students, seeing the latest medical devices, learning about clinical trials, and up-close looks at specimens.

Enrolling in Mini Medical School will give you the opportunity to:

  • Learn from the University of Iowa’s world-class experts
  • Participate in hands-on learning activities
  • Hear about leading-edge research and new medical therapies
  • Engage in discussion with others with a shared interest in the health sciences

Even better, there is no prerequisite, no entrance exam and no major financial commitment! A $20 per person tuition covers all three weeks of lectures, course materials, food and parking.

The 2019 3-week Mini Medical series is tentatively scheduled for Tuesdays, February 5, 12, and 19, 2019. Registration for this program will begin in late-fall.
