University of Iowa Children's Hospital Profile

University of Iowa Children's Hospital Care Team

I am currently Director of the Cleft and Craniofacial Service, and am a cleft surgeon doing primary, speech, ear and final revision/rhinoplasty surgeries. I also collaborate with Pediatric Neurosurgeon Dr. Arnold Menezes on craniofacial reconstruction surgeries. My research interests include outcomes research to improve our clinical results and cleft nasal airway research work, which comprised my MS thesis work. I also love to collaborate with the many cleft and craniofacial scientists and clinicians here to advance our shared goals. Biomedical Engineering BS from Iowa was my first degree and engineering my first career, having worked at 3M Company in St. Paul, MN for a decade. I returned to school in Minnesota for medical school and otolaryngology residency with masters degree embedded. My fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology brought me back to Iowa for two years of pediatric otolaryngology fellowship, the second year focused on cleft and craniofacial care. This training was under the mentorship of Dr. John Canady, University of Iowa cleft surgeon and then the President of the American Society of Plastic Surgery. As Dr. Canady left for industry in 2011, I inherited the practice and team leadership and continue his protocol in the care of our cleft and craniofacial patients with an amazing and experienced interdisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers. I hope to reduce barriers and boundaries of expertise and specialty to create synergistic research collaborations that accelerate our improvements in care for children with cleft and craniofacial anomalies.
