Faculty Profile

Brief description of current research:

Dr. Mark's research has addressed brain control of the sympathetic nervous system and its role in physiologic and pathologic states, including obesity and the metabolic syndrome.  His research has focused on mechanisms of obesity-induced hypertension, including the sympathetic actions of leptin and the concept introduced in his laboratory of selective leptin resistance in obese states.  In 2017, Dr. Mark received the Excellence Award in Hypertension Research from the American Heart Association Council on Hypertension.  In 2011, Dr. Mark and Dr. Charles Brenner founded and now co-direct the UI Obesity Research and Education Initiative that interacts and partners extensively with the FOEDRC.
