Foreword for Surgery Section (year 2000)
The Iowa Head and Neck Protocols is a refreshing approach to the diagnosis and Management of a broad range of clinical conditions that present in the head and neck. Included with the clinical guidelines are additional useful information such as instrument lists, commonly used CPT codes, and Tumor Board structure and function. The clinical protocols include guidelines for all members of the health care team, including physicians, nurses, and speech therapists. The book is derived from the handbook used for the Iowa Head and Neck Oncolory course, which has been held annually for more than 25 years. Now greatly expanded to include non-neoplastic disease, the protocols reflect a long-held institutional commitment to the interdisciplinary management of head and neck disease. The authors are all highly respected authorities on the topics, bringing a consistent institutional approach to theclinical management decisions. Although different patients and individual practices may require alternative management options, the authors provide clear reasons for selecting their preferred options. The protocols will be updated annually so that those who purchase the book will be assured of up-to-date information. This is a well-conceived, well-designed book that will be an indispensable reference for students and practitioners alike.

Foreword for Nursing Section
The University of Iowa Department of Otolaryngology--Head and Neck Surgery has long been recognized for the treatment of patients with tumors of the head and neck. The annual Iowa Head and Neck Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery course has been attended by physicians and nurses from around the world for more than 25 years. To finally have a book of Iowa Head and Neck Protocols available as a reference for all healthcare professionals providing care to the head and neck patient populations is a valuable tool. The book contains guidelines for the physician, nurse, and speech-language pathologist.
The nursing section offers examples of teaching tools, critical pathways, and procedures that provide state-of-the-art patient care. With the economics of todayís healthcare system, one of the main goals of patient care is to prepare the patient for self-care in the home. The care that was once provided by nurses in the hospital is now taught to the patient and family. Minimal teaching information is available to help us accomplish this.
The Iowa Head and Neck Protocols will provide the reader with information that can be used or adapted to individual settings. The Iowa Head and Neck Protocols will be updated annually and will provide the reader with the latest information available. The user-friendly layout makes it an easy and comprehensive reference. This book will be an asset to nurses providing care to the head and neck tumor patient.

Foreword for Speech Pathology Section
This manual is simple and to the point. It summarizes not only the procedures for various head and neck protocols, but also gives rationales for making various measurements. Several of these procedures have been discussed in some detail with investigators of the National Center for Voice and Speech during our annual NCVS meetings. These discussions involved a team effort between basic scientists, speech-language pathologists, and otolaryngologists. There is no doubt that modifications in the protocols will take place in the future, but as it stands now, this manual contains an up-to-date summary of a workable protocol for a busy clinical setting in the United States. I congratulate this group of investigators for their insights and the time they have taken to develop these topics as a team.
