The CCOM Neurosurgery Interest Group functions with the goals of providing students the opportunity to learn more about the field of neurosurgery from staff, residents, and other students. The chapter is well integrated with the Department of Neurosurgery, with faculty and residents present at each meeting. We organize presentations and discussions led by staff or residents on research updates, patient cases, and procedural demonstrations. In addition, we invite residents to discuss the matching process and residency lifestyle. Chapter members also have the opportunity to attend weekly neurosurgery department meetings including research conferences, tumor board, and resident case conferences to provide opportunity for additional exposure. In the future we would like to expose students to neurosurgery via cadaveric dissections to teach relevant anatomy and surgical approaches, as well as organize an annual service project by working with The Brain Injury Alliance of Iowa.
We currently meet as a neurosurgery chapter once per month. The meetings are typically formatted by The President providing updates on the goals and projects of the Chapter prior to introducing the main discussion for that meeting.
We would like to invite students from all levels with any interest in pursuing neurosurgery to join by emailing any of the officers.
