National Health Service Corps State Loan Repayment Program

Health Resources and Services Administration (HSRA) provides a state loan repayment program (SLRP) by providing cost-sharing grants to more than 30 students to operate their own loan repayment programs.  These state programs offer loan repayment to primary care providers working in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs).  Medical graduates pursuing careers in pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatry, family or internal medicine, or obstetrics and gynecology are eligible for the program.  In addition Physician Assistants (specializing in adult, family, pediatrics, psychiatry/mental health, geriatrics, or women's health) also may be eligible.  The amount of loan repayment assistance varies from state to state.  For example, the Iowa program for allopathic medical providers allows for up to $50,000 for a two-year service.  https://nhsc.hrsa.gov/loan-repayment/state-loan-repayment-program/application-requirements  You must be a US Citizen or other lawful permanent resident, licensed to practice in the state where you will work, and working at an eligible site in a HPSA, and have federal or private loans that are not consolidated with other non-educational loans that were used for school tuition, reasonable education and living expenses.  A minimum of two years of full time service in exchange for loan repayment assistance, states may require longer minimum service commitments.  Since award amounts and service amounts vary by state, you should contact the SLRP contact for the state in which you are or plan to practice.  Visit this site for a list of SLRP offices for each state.  Further information about his program can be found at: https://nhsc.hrsa.gov/loan-repayment/state-loan-repayment-program/index.html

Funding for the program is supported by both federal and state funds. Eligible specialties include family practice, obstetrics gynecology, general internal medicine or general pediatrics.
