Welcome to the University of Iowa Sports Medicine Interest Group! SMIG is one of the newest groups to join the long list of Student Interest Groups here at the Carver College of Medicine and we certainly appreciate YOUR interest! Simply stated we are a group of students with an interest and passion for Sports Medicine. Our goal is to expose students to the very dynamic field of Sports Medicine encompassing everything from the Primary Care setting to the Operating Room. We also hope to present Sports Medicine in a way that highlights how the skills and practices learned here can translate very well to all aspects of medicine regardless of specialty or practice. Please feel free to explore our webpage or contact any of our officers with any questions. Once again, thank you and welcome!
What is Sports Medicine?
Sports medicine is an area of health and special services that apply medical and scientific knowledge to prevent, recognize, manage, and rehabilitate injuries related to sport, exercise, or recreational activity.
The Sports Medicine Team consists of Physicians, Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Officials, Coaches, Parents, Athletes, and of course Students.
Who is SMIG for?
ANYONE! Whether you are just joining us here at CCOM or on your way out, join us!
Who practices Sports Medicine?
Multiple specialties offer special qualification in Sports Medicine, typically in the form of a post-residency fellowship. For example Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Orthopedic Surgery all offer special training in Sports Medicine. Even if your interests lie outside of these fields its safe to say that most specialties employ skills that can be learned through Sports Medicine.
