Student Interest Group in Neurology

The Student Interest Group in Neurology (SIGN) is an organization started by the American Academy of Neurology that introduces medical students to the exciting field of neurology. Through SIGN, medical students have a great opportunity to meet other students, residents, and neurologists from the University of Iowa College of Medicine and surrounding communities to discuss their common interests in neurology.

At our monthly SIGN meetings, presentations and information sessions by physicians, residents, or research scientists cover material that the students themselves wish to learn more about, such as what subspecialties are available in neurology, how to apply for neurology residencies, what a resident in neurology does during their training, etc.

SIGN also sponsors a shadowing program at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where students are paired with a neurologist for all or part of a day. While shadowing, students have the opportunity to observe patients, see how physicians and residents in neurology handle different medical cases, and ask questions.
