The Surgical Interest Group at Iowa aims to expand the awareness of general surgery and the multiple surgical sub-specialties. Surgery is a complex field of study that demands practice of surgical skills. SIG has workshops throughout the year that provide exposure to various surgical techniques such as suturing. We sponsor lunch seminars that cover topics such as careers in surgery, surgical research, and how to prepare for rotations/residency. SIG has a mentor program that gives its members the opportunity to learn about the field of surgery from a University of Iowa faculty member. In addition, it provides the opportunity for students to organize research positions for summer or during the academic year, shadowing experiences, and clinical and professional development.
