Core C is a research training core with the long-term goal of developing the next generation of muscular dystrophy clinical and basic scientists. In particular, this Core supports two Medical Student Fellowships, a Postdoctoral Fellowship, and an Undergraduate Research Fellowship. This training effort is vital because there is an urgent need for basic scientists and clinicians who can partner to develop, test and implement muscular dystrophy therapies. Core C fosters a vibrant training environment by involving trainees in clinical, basic or translational research.  Trainees also participate in monthly Wellstone Neuromuscular Conferences, the annual Patient and Family Conference, and tours of MDSRC laboratories.

Medical Student Fellowship

The Wellstone Medical Student Fellowship is open to students currently enrolled in any medical school within in the United States who have completed their first year of medical school. The Iowa Wellstone Center at the University of Iowa offers outstanding clinical and laboratory facilities to conduct translational research in muscular dystrophy. Fellows participate in the clinical care of muscular dystrophy patients with Dr. Katherine Mathews (Pediatrics and Neurology) and evaluate muscle biopsies with Dr. Steven Moore (Pathology).  Research opportunities include clinical and translational studies with all three mentors.  The fellowship provides a stipend and benefits, as well as funds to attend a national scientific meeting.
