Frequently Asked Questions

What courses can I take to prepare for a career in perfusion?

We require all applicants to take courses in pathology, physiology (especially cardiovascular), anatomy, physics (fluid dynamics). A management or statistics course are both ways to strengthen your application as well.

What can I do to make my application stand out?

  • All application materials were submitted before the deadline (November 1) without reminders from the program coordinator.
  • All prerequisite courses were completed and clearly marked on transcripts and GPA in these courses' averages 3.3-4.0.
  • Reference forms were submitted on time and gave a good picture as to the applicant's academic capability, personality, and character.
  • Multiple cardiopulmonary bypass cases were observed and perfusionists were interviewed before the applicant applied.

How can I stand out in the interview process?

  • Interview testing indicated a good grasp of the physiology and physics knowledge needed for entry into this program.
  • Interview committee scoring during the interview indicated that the applicant's personality and work ethic would be a good fit for this program.

These characteristics along with the applicant essay are all scored. Our course work is rigorous, and we like to recruit students that are self-motivated and willing to put in the time it takes to not just memorize material but know it so it can be applied in their professional work.

Is it okay to send multiple packets instead of one big application packet?

We prefer all application materials be submitted in one packet as we have so many applications (between 60-75).

If I have applied before, do I need to resubmit every document again?

We ask that you update your application and personal essay. If you have additional materials like reference letters, shadowing experiences, and transcripts from courses taken since applying last, please email those to us so that we can assess improvement of your application.

Can I apply if I am still taking prerequisite classes?

If courses are completed prior to the start of the program and clearly marked on the prerequisites form, you are eligible to apply.

Can I shadow a perfusionist at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics?

We are currently unable to let prospective students into our OR (even before COVID). We do prefer however that you talk with “real world” perfusionists not associated with a teaching hospital environment to gain perspective on the profession.

Do you accept international students?

While we have not in the past had international students in the program, if you meet all requirements, we will consider your application.

For education obtained at a non-U.S. institution, translation into the U.S. equivalency (i.e. equivalence of credits per course and of degree conferred) must be submitted with our application. Examples of foreign transcript/degree evaluators would be World Education Services, Educational Credential Evaluators, Educational Perspectives, etc.).

Please refer to the World Education Services for more information on applying to the program.
