University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics
The Radiation Sciences students will have active clinical assignments at the University of Iowa Hosptials and Clinics. The hospital is nationally ranked and offers an unparalleled learning environment for radiation sciences students. Iowa's only academic medical center, UI Hospitals and Clinics provides a comprehensive array of health care services in all the medical specialties and major subspecialties. At UI Hospitals and Clinics, the radiation sciences student will be actively involved providing specialized care for hospital and clinic patients with 1,432 physicians, residents, and fellows, and 7,482 non-physician employees, including 1,806 professional nurses.
Radiology Department
The Department of Radiology at The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is staffed by 71 registered radiologic technologists, 70 staff radiologists and physicists, 34 physician residents and fellows in radiology, and nursing and other ancillary personnel. The department performs more than 302,394 radiographic examinations and treatments each year. There are some 60 imaging units that incorporate the newest technology available to better serve patients. The department strives to maintain a friendly, personal, and efficient approach to patient care.
Cardiovascular Interventional Department
The cardiovascular Interventional departments are active in providing images that are used for diagnostic purposes and for therapeutic intervention of stenosis, obstruction, arteriovenous malformation, tumor and pain management. Approximately 12,500 procedures are performed each year in the angiography and 2,400 procedures in the cardiac catheterization divisions. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has suites dedicated to peripheral, neurologic, and cardiac procedures. These suites utilize a variety of single and bi-plane imaging systems, digital subtraction, GDC coils, angiojet, rotablator, intravascular coronary US and Bionese Noga left ventricular mapping.
Computed Tomography Department
The Computed Tomography Department is an active, fast paced area within the Radiology Department that continually grows, keeping up with the exciting CT advancements. Currently, the department is staffed from 7 am to 11:30 pm with CT technologists and has Siemens and Toshiba scanners for a total of seven scanners with a range of 4 to 64 slice capability. The department performs 871 plus-CT exams per week, scheduling outpatient procedures from 7 am to 4 pm. In the 2005-2006 fiscal year the CT department performed 45,334 head and whole body scans. To best serve the hospital and clinic patients, the CT department performs an array of procedures, to include routine head and body scanning, spine, joint and extremity scanning, biopsy and abscess drainage, stealth studies for stereotactic studies, 3D imaging, cardiac CT, CT urograms, coronary calcification studies, facet injections for pain therapy treatment, CT Enteroclysis for Crohn’s, and CT angiograms.
Diagnostic Medical Sonography Department
The diagnostic medical sonography student will have clinical assignments in many different areas of UI Hospitals & Clinics including the Departments of Radiology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and the Heart and Vascular Center. Students will have the opportunity to work on a variety of different types of modern sonographic equipment. The student's clinical experiences will include routine imaging, high risk obstetrics and gynecology, pediatric and neonatal exams, transplant patients, invasive procedures, 3D imaging and other specialized imaging. Rotations to other clinical sites provide a variety of additional clinical experiences.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging Department
The Magnetic Resonance Imaging Department is an active, newly remodeled area within the Radiology Department. The department is continually learning exciting MRI advancements. Currently, the department is staffed from 7 am to 11:30 pm with MRI technologists and has Siemens magnets for a total of four 1.5 tesla magnets and one 3 tesla magnet within the hospital. UI Hospitals and Clinics also operates a magnet at U of I Sports medicine clinic. The department performs 350 MRI exams per week, scheduling outpatient procedures from 7 am to 6 pm. To best serve the hospital and clinic patients, the MRI department performs procedures in all areas, which include neuro, orthopedic, body imaging. These procedures include brain, spine, joint and extremity imaging, as well as cardiac, liver, renal, breast, prostate and MRA imaging. The internship also provides a look at how MRI is used in research.
Radiation Oncology Department
The Department of Radiation Oncology is staffed by 15 registered radiation therapists, 7 physicians, 13 physicists, 7 dosimetrists, and 10 nurses. These highly qualified professionals work together to treat approximately 1450 cancer patients per year. The department uses state-of-the-art imaging techniques to deliver a wide array of effective radiation therapy treatment delivery. Some of these delivery techniques include stereotactic body radiation therapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, intra-operative radiation therapy, high dose rate brachytherapy, external beam radiation therapy, and intensity modulated radiation therapy.
