Buprenorphine (Suboxone®, Subutex®) is an opioid partial agonist used as substitution therapy in patients recovering from opioid addiction. Similar to methadone, buprenorphine helps manage opioid cravings and withdrawal symptoms. The Buprenorphine, Urine Screen uses an immunoassay that targets norbuprenorphine, the main metabolite of buprenorphine.  Patients that are compliant with buprenorphine therapy should test positive with the screening test. The testing is thus useful as a means to monitor compliance with therapy. An alternative use of the testing is to screen for non-medical use of buprenorphine.
