Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite that is capable of infecting humans. Toxoplasmosis is acquired through ingestion of water or food contaminated with cat feces or undercooked meat infected with oocysts. Toxoplasma can cause serious illness, especially in immunocompromised individuals. In pregnancy, infection of the fetus through the placenta can also occur and lead to congenital toxoplasmosis. Detection of IgM-class antibodies to Toxoplasma can be clinically useful as a screen for recent infection.
