Targeted RNA Fusion Panel for Lung and Thyroid Carcinoma

Cancer Cytopathology Journal Cover

Cancer mutation profiling in lung adenocarcinoma and thyroid tumors using a novel technology in use at the University of Iowa Molecular Pathology Laboratory was recently featured on the cover of Cancer Cytopathology with the publication of the manuscript describing the work here at UIHC.

The article entitled "Simultaneous detection of single‐nucleotide variant, deletion/insertion, and fusion in lung and thyroid carcinoma using cytology specimen and an RNA‐based next‐generation sequencing assay" was led by Deqin Ma, MD, PhD and included a multi-disciplinary team of technologists, bioinformatics scientists, and pathologists.

Team members included:

Natalya Guseva, PhD
Omar Jaber, MD
Krishnaveni Sompallae, PhD
Amani Bashir, MD
Ramakrishna Sompallae, PhD
Chris Jensen, MD

The accompanying editorial mentioned that this study “represents a step forward in maximizing the information from cytological smears for personalized/precision medicine”. This has become more and more important as tumors are identified at earlier stages and provide less tissue for diagnosis.

Cancer Cytopathology is a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society and has one of the highest impact factors among cytopathology journals. This is the second time that our work was selected for the cover page of this journal.
