Emma Handler, PhD

Clinical Instructor of Anatomy and Cell Biology

Introduction

My research focuses on two distinct topics. As a biological anthropologist, I am interested in the effects of behavioral evolution on the development of hard tissue structures, like teeth, in mammals. In order to explore this question, I work with domesticated foxes to compare how intentionally selected docile behavioral changes influence the size and structure of their teeth. This work aims to contribute to understanding of the complex relationship between factors controlling both temperament and dental development.

As an anatomy educator, I am also interested in improving student learning. My budding research interest in this field has begun with exploring how students best learn in an online environment. This work considers how active learning can be implemented in an online classroom and investigates student perceptions and performance of various active learning techniques. This work aims to elucidate how, and which, active learning activities can best support student learning in an online environment.
