Vice-Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion


The University of Iowa Department of Anesthesia is seeking an accomplished academic anesthesiologist to serve as The Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Position Description:

The Vice Chair will provide vision and leadership in promoting a departmental culture that values and supports diversity, equity, and inclusion. This individual will report to the Chair of the Department of Anesthesia and work closely with the Chair, University and CCOM Diversity Leadership, and Anesthesia Administration. The selectee will also oversee activities as they relate to faculty and trainee recruitment, faculty development and trainee education, and patient care. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate cultural awareness and agility, exercise emotional intelligence, build trust and credibility, and collaborate with a wide variety of stakeholders to achieve operational goals.


  • Provide clear vision and leadership for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives across the department’s various clinical, research, and teaching sites. These initiatives should align with departmental goals and the College of Medicine Strategic Plan.
  • Drive the development of new diversity-related programs and activities that anticipate and meet departmental needs. This includes keeping abreast of best practices and current trends in diversity and inclusion and bringing that knowledge to inform program and policy development work
  • Work closely with faculty and staff search committees, residency and fellowship program leadership, and department leadership to provide effective strategies for identifying diverse candidates and addressing bias in the screening and selection processes
  • In collaboration with Anesthesia Administration, enhance our recruitment and retention of faculty/residents/staff from underrepresented groups
  • Participate and provide guidance in new faculty orientation sessions regarding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Contribute to a welcoming and inclusive culture across the department
  • Facilitate ongoing learning among departmental members on DEI-related issues
  • To develop and implement a departmental strategic plan for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Advise the department chair on all matters related to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the Department
  • Contribute to identification/discussion of health disparities that can be enhanced by the department
  • Chair the Department of Anesthesia Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee
  • Work with DEI offices at the College and University levels
  • Maintain accountability for the department fulfilling its annual Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion goals and metrics
  • Attend meetings with departmental leadership to coordinate Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plans with other departmental core missions including education, clinical care and research
  • Report to the Chair and departmental faculty at least annually regarding accomplishments and future plans in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
  • Other special projects to be determined in consultation with the Chair

Required Qualifications

  • Candidates must show successful completion of an approved residency program in anesthesiology
  • Candidates must hold an MD, DO, or equivalent degree
  • Candidates must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Iowa
  • Candidates must be board-certified in Anesthesiology (or non-US Board equivalent)
  • Demonstrated interest, commitment, and leadership in education with excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience promoting a diverse workforce/academic environment

Required Certifications

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated track record in diversity, equity, and inclusion programmatic development
  • Fellowship training or equivalent clinical experience in any of the anesthesiology subspecialty areas
